Connecticut Erupts Over Reported Immigration, ICE Arrests

Connecticut is becoming the latest battleground in President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

Nearly 100 people have reportedly been arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) across the state this week, with the largest concentration of arrests taking place in Danbury, according to the immigration rights group Danbury Unites for Immigrants. ICE has not confirmed the total.

The surge has turned Danbury into the center of a growing political fight between federal immigration authorities and Connecticut Democrats.

Gov. Ned Lamont has sharply criticized the operation, saying, “This has to stop,” after an ICE agent used a Taser on a man during an arrest Thursday morning. The man was taken to a hospital.

Federal officials offered a very different account.

The Department of Homeland Security said the man resisted arrest, reached for a pocketknife and refused officers’ commands before agents used a Taser to gain compliance.

The incident came after several days of stepped-up enforcement in Danbury, Stamford, Bridgeport and other Connecticut communities.

By Thursday, advocates said more than 50 people had been detained in Danbury alone. Reports from activists later pushed the statewide estimate toward 100.

The arrests have drawn fierce criticism from Lamont, U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy and other Democratic officials, who have demanded more information about the federal operation.

But the Trump administration isn’t backing down.

ICE has made clear that its mission is to enforce federal immigration law, arguing that people who violate immigration laws can face consequences.

That puts Connecticut directly in the middle of Trump’s broader deportation campaign.

The state’s Democratic leadership is pushing back. The Trump administration is pushing forward.

And Danbury has become the latest front line in the fight over how aggressively the federal government should enforce America’s immigration laws.
