Democratic Socialists Are Quietly Building Their 2028 AOC Campaign

The Democratic Socialists of America gathered in Chicago this weekend for its national convention, and one question dominated the hallways: whether the country's largest socialist organization will formally throw its weight behind Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for president in 2028.

Officially, nothing has been decided. A key procedural vote of 14 to 13 blocked an all-member poll on a potential Ocasio-Cortez endorsement weeks before the convention, and the group's roughly 120,000 members won't get a binding say until the next national convention in August 2027. But that hasn't stopped the machinery from turning.

Inside DSA, a caucus called "Groundwork" has been pushing to fast-track an endorsement, arguing that waiting until 2027 hands away a critical head start. J. Ryder, a prominent communist and founder of Geese magazine said:

"Waiting to endorse in August of next year at the convention may mean 6 months+ of vital AOC campaign time where the masses will be mobilizing without intervention by DSA."

He didn't stop there, describing the committee's decision to block a member poll as "severely disappointing" and warning it would put DSA "on the back foot in the 2028 moment."

The Groundwork caucus has circulated a petition urging the organization to endorse Ocasio-Cortez "on day one," and members have argued DSA "should be ready to position ourselves as the political home for the millions of people that will be inspired by AOC's message and position our organization as the vital core of AOC's campaign."

That's not activist enthusiasm talking around the edges. That's a national socialist organization explicitly describing itself as the operational backbone of a sitting congresswoman's future presidential run, before she's even entered the race.

Ocasio-Cortez has publicly maintained that she isn't seeking any endorsements because she isn't running for anything else right now. But her own words leave plenty of room. Asked about a 2028 bid, she's offered lines like: "Could I be president? Could I not be president?", hardly a denial.

Meanwhile, recent polling has shown Ocasio-Cortez leading early Democratic presidential surveys, which is precisely the kind of data point fueling the urgency inside DSA's ranks.

DSA's fingerprints are already on New York City Hall. The same organizational network now maneuvering to draft AOC helped elect Zohran Mamdani as mayor, and Ocasio-Cortez represents NY-14, a district spanning the Bronx and Queens. If DSA succeeds in formally coalescing behind her for 2028, the Northeast won't just be home to a democratic socialist mayor and a growing DSA footprint in state legislatures. It'll be the launching pad for a serious socialist run at the presidency itself.
