Republican cash advantage reshapes New York’s 21st District congressional race

Share

Republican Anthony Constantino enters the final stretch of New York’s 21st Congressional District race with a substantial cash advantage over Democratic challenger Blake Gendebien, giving the Republican nominee considerably more money available for the closing weeks of the campaign.

The contest is for an open seat being vacated by Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik, who is not seeking reelection. Constantino, a businessman who has invested heavily in his own campaign, faces Gendebien, a dairy farmer campaigning on economic issues affecting upstate communities.

Campaign finance figures through September 30 show Constantino with approximately $4.1 million in cash on hand, compared with roughly $470,000 for Gendebien. Constantino’s campaign reported approximately $14.4 million in total contributions, while Gendebien’s campaign reported just under $7.2 million. The figures can be reviewed in PaidForPolitics’ NY-21 campaign finance tracker.

The gap reflects Constantino’s ability to finance his own campaign, rather than a straightforward comparison of money raised from outside donors. The distinction matters because self-funding can give a candidate substantial advertising resources without requiring the same level of traditional fundraising.

Outside spending has added another dimension to the contest. Data compiled by PaidForPolitics showed that outside groups had spent approximately $1.64 million in the general election supporting Gendebien or opposing Constantino through October 20. About $40,000 had been reported opposing Gendebien, with no comparable outside spending supporting Constantino in the general election at that point.

The outside spending figures are separate from candidate campaign accounts and reflect independent expenditures by political organizations.

Despite the Republican financial advantage, the race has drawn increased attention as Democrats look for opportunities in districts they believe could become competitive. An October poll cited by City & State New York showed Gendebien leading Constantino by four percentage points, though the contest remains challenging for Democrats given the district’s Republican lean. City & State’s congressional race analysis provides additional context on the competitive landscape.

The district stretches across a broad swath of northern New York, including rural communities where economic pressures, energy costs and agricultural concerns are central campaign issues.

Constantino has emphasized his support for President Donald Trump and his willingness to spend his own money on the race. Gendebien has focused on economic issues and the concerns of rural residents.

The campaign now faces a final stretch in which advertising, voter outreach and the candidates’ ability to connect with voters may prove decisive. Constantino’s cash reserves give him a substantial financial resource, while Gendebien’s campaign and allied outside groups have continued to invest in making New York's open seat competitive.
