Six Northeast States Launch Traffic Crackdown

State police across six Northeast states are stepping up traffic enforcement this week, targeting speeding, distracted driving and impaired motorists in a coordinated three-day operation.

The initiative, dubbed Operation Wicked Safe, brings together police agencies in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York and Rhode Island. The enforcement campaign runs Tuesday through Thursday, with officers conducting highly visible and targeted patrols.

Connecticut State Police Col. Daniel Loughman said the effort is intended to deter dangerous driving and encourage motorists to obey posted speed limits.

“Slowing down, ditching the distraction and driving sober saves lives,” Loughman said, according to CT Insider.

Massachusetts State Police Lt. Col. Brendhan Shugrue said the participating agencies would focus on behaviors that put motorists, passengers, pedestrians and other road users in danger.

The campaign comes as dangerous driving remains a persistent concern across the region. A 2025 AAA study cited by participating agencies found that 96% of surveyed drivers admitted to engaging in risky driving behavior during the previous year.

That figure includes a broad range of behaviors, however, and does not mean 96% of drivers committed a traffic offense during the operation's enforcement period.

The multistate effort gives police agencies an opportunity to coordinate their approach to common road-safety problems across state lines. But the ultimate measure of its effectiveness will be whether enforcement helps reduce dangerous driving and prevent crashes.

Officials have emphasized visible patrols and deterrence, but the agencies' announcements do not establish a uniform number of citations or arrests they expect to make.

Motorists traveling across New England and New York should expect increased enforcement through Thursday, particularly for speeding, distracted driving and driving under the influence.
