14-Term Democrat Loses Primary, Ending 28-Year Run in Congress

A 28-year congressional career came to an end Tuesday night when former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin defeated 14-term Democratic Rep. John Larson in Connecticut's 1st Congressional District primary.

Bronin won 54% of the vote to Larson's 33%, delivering the biggest upset of Connecticut's 2026 election cycle. It was also the first time in modern Connecticut history that a sitting member of Congress lost a primary.

Larson, 78, had represented the district since 1999 and built a reputation as one of the state's most established Democrat power brokers. Bronin, 47, made Larson's longevity a central issue, campaigning on the need for new leadership in Washington.

Larson leaned on seniority, touting his record and pointing to his path back to a full committee chairmanship. He carried endorsements from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and several major unions, but was ultimately outspent by Bronin's campaign.

Bronin campaigned on generational turnover, arguing voters deserved "a real choice" after nearly three decades without primary competition in the district. He called the result "a political earthquake in Connecticut" at his victory party Tuesday night.

The result comes amid growing signs of voter frustration with political incumbency. Bronin had also outraised Larson and secured the backing of Democratic leaders like 2028 presidential contender Pete Buttigieg and outside groups before Tuesday's vote.

The district has voted Democratic in every election since 1960, and Bronin enters the general as the heavy favorite. He'll face Republican Amy Chai, who previously ran as an independent in Connecticut's 3rd District in 2022, in November.
