Jews Targeted in 70% of July Hate Crimes Under Mamdani

New NYPD statistics released Monday show anti-Jewish hate crimes accounted for roughly 70% of New York City's confirmed bias incidents in July, with 23 of 33 confirmed cases targeting Jewish New Yorkers during Mayor Zohran Mamdani's seventh month in office.

The July numbers are part of a broader trend that has defined Mamdani's first year running City Hall. The NYPD recorded 205 anti-Jewish hate crimes during the first seven months of 2026, up from 189 during the same period last year, an 8.5% increase. Citywide, confirmed hate crimes reached 360 so far this year, compared to 329 during the same stretch in 2025, a 9.4% rise. Anti-Jewish incidents made up 56.9% of the total, even though Jewish residents represent only about 10% of the city's population.

The July numbers followed one of the most violent bias incidents of Mamdani's tenure so far. On July 23, a 51-year-old man allegedly shouted "Allahu Akbar" while stabbing a Jewish man leaving synagogue services, in an attack police classified as a hate crime. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch visited the synagogue afterward to denounce antisemitic rhetoric and reassure the congregation.

Mamdani retained Tisch, an appointee of his predecessor, when he took office, but friction between the two has surfaced repeatedly, most recently over the mayor's public musings about arresting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu despite lacking legal authority to do so.

Jewish organizations have pointed to the numbers as evidence of a worsening climate under Mamdani, who has spent much of his time in office as a vocal critic of Israel and its leadership. The Zionist Organization of America previously accused the mayor of promoting what it called an anti-American, pro-Hamas agenda, citing his decision to appoint an 18-member judicial advisory panel with no Jewish members despite the city's Jewish population being the largest in the nation.
