Kelly Ayotte Survives Democratic Surge, Wins Second Term as New Hampshire Governor

Share

Republican Gov. Kelly Ayotte defeated Democrat Cinde Warmington Tuesday, securing a second term and delivering one of the most significant Republican victories in New England on an otherwise difficult election night for the GOP.

Ayotte's victory came as Democrats made substantial gains elsewhere in New Hampshire, including congressional races and legislative contests, highlighting the state's increasingly divided political landscape.

The Associated Press called the gubernatorial race shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday. With approximately 90% of the vote reported, Ayotte led Warmington 51.1% to 47.2%, according to election results reported by Fox News.

The victory allows Ayotte to continue the Republican tradition of holding New Hampshire's governorship despite the state's competitive political environment and Democratic strength in federal elections.

Ayotte campaigned heavily on affordability, housing, public safety and protecting New Hampshire's lack of a broad-based income or sales tax. She also highlighted legislation intended to address the state's housing shortage by easing local zoning restrictions and encouraging residential construction.

Warmington, a former member of the New Hampshire Executive Council, made affordability a central theme of her campaign, criticizing the administration over rising housing costs, electricity rates, prescription drug prices and property taxes.

But Ayotte's campaign repeatedly returned to Warmington's past work representing Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer of OxyContin, and her lobbying connections to the pharmaceutical industry. Warmington acknowledged regretting aspects of that work but argued that Ayotte was using the controversy to distract from the state's economic challenges.

As New Hampshire Bulletin reported, the opioid controversy became a defining issue of the campaign, with Republicans repeatedly using Warmington's past professional associations to challenge her candidacy.

Ayotte's reelection, however, does not mean Republicans will have an easy time governing. Democrats made major gains in the legislature and are positioned to take control of both legislative chambers and the Executive Council.

That could leave Ayotte facing a substantially different political environment during her second term, with Democrats better positioned to challenge her administration's budget priorities, education policies and legislative agenda.

For Republicans, however, retaining the governorship provides an important foothold in a state where Democrats continue to dominate federal elections.

Ayotte's victory demonstrates that Republican candidates can still win statewide in New Hampshire, even as the party faces broader challenges across the Northeast.
