Rep. Mike Lawler used Monday night's first televised debate to put Democrat Cait Conley on the defensive over where she lives and who pays her.

Lawler told viewers Conley lives in Virginia, holds no-show" jobs with artificial intelligence and Big Tech firms, and will head home if she loses in November. He also pressed her repeatedly to condemn alleged antisemitism tied to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Conley said her military service and overseas assignments explained her time away from the Hudson Valley. Lawler later called her "bought and paid for" by the AI industry, drawing a heated response.

Conley went after Lawler on tariffs and data centers. She said he has voted eight times for tariffs and blamed him for five data centers built in Rockland County, with three more on the way. Lawler said the facilities predate his time in Congress and have nothing to do with AI. He defended tariffs as leverage for fair trade and credited them with cutting prescription drug prices by more than 3 percent.

On utility costs, Lawler pointed to Albany, saying the state has shut down nuclear power, banned natural gas extraction and blocked pipelines. The NRCC has pressed the same contrast. In an August report, the committee said Conley opposes reopening the Indian Point nuclear plant, which Lawler toured with Energy Secretary Chris Wright in March.

New York's 17th District covers all of Rockland and Putnam counties, most of northern Westchester and part of southern Dutchess. Lawler is the first Republican to hold the seat in roughly 40 years. Conley's campaign and the DCCC say he votes with President Trump 100 percent of the time, per the DCCC's debate recap, a claim Lawler called false on stage.

In August, the NRCC cited polling showing Lawler ahead 50 percent to 45 percent. The two have one more televised debate scheduled before Election Day on Nov. 3.
