Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is donating $300,000 to New York Democrats and taking her campaign show to Syracuse, Utica and Buffalo ahead of the midterms.
The money goes to a state fund controlled by Gov. Kathy Hochul. Ocasio-Cortez said New York has become central to the fight for a House majority and that she will go wherever she is needed, focusing on young voters and voters of color in communities far from her New York City home turf.
Half the money is earmarked for Spanish-language outreach, with the funds going toward voter organizing. The upstate swing also feeds talk about her next move. She held a series of town halls across upstate New York last summer that could broaden her appeal for a statewide run, and a Senate bid would pit her against Chuck Schumer, the Democrats' Senate leader.
The check is modest, but it does political work. It elevates her standing with Hochul, helps put past disputes with the state party behind her, and buys goodwill outside the city whether she chases the presidency or a Senate seat in 2028.
Democrats need the help in tight spots. Ocasio-Cortez has already campaigned with Hudson Valley Rep. Pat Ryan. First-term Rep. Josh Riley is favored to hold his Catskills swing district, and Democrats see an outside chance at Rep. Elise Stefanik's North Country seat now that she is stepping down.
The message may face resistance in the region. Siena polling shows upstate voters view another New York City progressive, Mayor Zohran Mamdani, unfavorably by 46 percent to 41 percent, and Republicans are already using him as a symbol of what they call the Democratic Party's leftward turn. Siena pollster Steven Greenberg called the effect a "double-edged sword."
Ocasio-Cortez says talk of a run for higher office waits until after the Nov. 3 midterms.
