New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is set to welcome President Donald Trump to Gracie Mansion Monday, bringing two politicians who once traded fierce political attacks together for a high-profile meeting at the mayor’s official residence.
Trump is visiting New York for the United Nations General Assembly, and Mamdani’s office said the meeting will focus on issues affecting New York City and its residents.
The meeting is notable given the two men’s sharply different political identities.
Mamdani campaigned against Trump and previously described the president in highly critical terms, while Trump repeatedly attacked Mamdani during the mayoral campaign.
But the relationship has changed since Mamdani’s election.
The two previously met in the Oval Office, where Trump gave the newly elected mayor a notably warm reception despite their political differences. They have also remained in contact by phone.
Mamdani has sought to establish a working relationship with the Trump administration, emphasizing the president’s New York roots and the need for cooperation between city and federal officials.
That approach has not eliminated disagreements.
Mamdani and Trump remain divided over foreign policy and other major issues. Mamdani previously campaigned on seeking a way to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if Netanyahu visited New York, though the mayor has since acknowledged the limits of his authority to do so.
The two also disagree over Trump’s Venezuela policy.
Still, the Gracie Mansion meeting represents a notable shift from campaign rhetoric to governing reality.
For Mamdani, the challenge is maintaining his progressive political identity while working with an administration whose policies differ sharply from his own.
For Trump, the meeting provides an opportunity to deal directly with New York’s mayor as the administration works with city officials on issues ranging from federal funding to immigration and public safety.
